Midway between Dijon and Beaune, Chateau de Gilly was originally a 14th-century Cistercian abbey. The main chateau and its formal gardens date from the 17th century, but the magnificent vaulted Gothic dining room was once the cellar of the abbey. This is a beautiful property, once a member of the Relais & Chateaux group, now affiliated with Small Luxury Hotels. There’s an outdoor pool, tennis, and a wealth of sports available on site. For those who long to live the life of the French gentry, Chateau de Gilly is a wonderful base from which to explore the vineyards of Burgundy.

Those looking for a bargain in Beaune will do no better than Hostellerie de Bretonniere. It very nicely located not far from the center of town. Rooms are clean and quiet and there’s a pretty courtyard where breakfast is served. There’s also free parking. A good choice for those who don’t want to spend a lot.

Though the present building was constructed in the 19th century, there’s been a Hotel de la Poste here since the 17th century. The location just outside the city walls is convenient and most rooms have views of the vineyards or the fortifications. The lobby and bar are especially attractive and the rooms are nicely outfitted. Service is very attentive and all in all, this is a lovely choice for those who wish to stay in town. The restaurant is also quite nice.

Those who prefer to stay in town will be very pleased with this member of the Small Luxury Hotel group. Originally a private residence dating from the 16th century, Le Cep is right in the center of town and has one of the loveliest courtyards in Beaune. This lovely Relais & Chateaux property north of Eperney is on a hilltop overlooking the vineyards of the Marne Valley. Once a coaching inn, the Champagne Royal is one of the nicest places to call home in the area. Each room has a private terrace. Bathrooms are modern and filled with special touches. And the suites are especially nice. The excellent restaurant serves more than 200 varieties of local wine and bubbly.

The restaurant at this Best Western affiliated property is truly one of the best in Dijon. The rooms and public areas are furnished with antiques and the 13th-century wine cellar and location near the Cathedral are big draws. Rooms have niceties like minibars and safes.
