Great Greek food at Molyvos in New York.

Greek Restaurant MykonosSome of the most memorable meals we've ever had were in Greece. From the gut-busting embarrassment of courses we shared with the little dog in Corfu Town, to the overpriced Little Venice Mykonos restaurant where the pelican ran off with the sea bass, to the lunch in Oia where the view overlooking Santorini's magnificent caldera was ours alone, we've always had great food, friendly service, and surprisingly good wine.

No wonder our Greek dining experiences outside of Greece have been wanting. But recently I had excellent Greek food and attentive service at Molyvos, in midtown west Manhattan. In addition to traditional favorites like Braised Lamb Shanks, Moussaka, and Roast Chicken, Chef Jim Botsacos also turns out innovative dishes like Crispy Skate, Marinated Beets and Skordalia, and Citrus Marinated Day Boat Scallops with Cucumber, Scottish Cured Salmon, and Chickpea Cake.

You could easily make a meal off the hot and cold mezedes. But whatever you order, don't miss the Horiatiki Salata - it's the best ever. Seafood lovers can start with Pan Fried Sardines or Prince Edward Island Mussels, Lemon, Mint, and Feta and then move on to Whole Grilled Fish or Orzo Risotto with Shrimp, Calamari, Saffron and Feta.

Desserts are just too tempting to pass up. Try Rizogalo (rice pudding) or Ahladopita (caramelized pear, walnut, and raisin wrapped in crispy phyllo cinnamon ice cream). Wine Enthusiast magazine named Molyvos one of the country's most wine friendly restaurants in 2007. So if you're not familiar with Greek wine, let your waiter suggest something for you. There are glasses, half bottles, and bottles in all price ranges.

Mykonos RestaurantBargain hunters will be pleased to know that Molyvos has extended their Restaurant Week prix fixe. You can get a three-course lunch for $24.07 and a three-course dinner for $35.
