Neide's Salsa and Samba - Brazilian and Mexican food in Hanalei

Neides Hanalei KauaiIn order to figure out where to eat on vacation, we spend hours poring over guidebooks, web sites, and magazines, as well as interrogating friends and family. So when we headed to Kauai in February, we had a short list for every part of the island.

Since Ahi tuna, in one form or another, seems to be on every Kauai menu, we wanted some alternatives. And Neide's Salsa and Samba, in the cute little town of Hanalei, sounded appealing.

Our GPS got us as far as the parking lot of the Old Hanalei School. From there, we had to set out on foot. Neide's is in the building that's adjacent to the old schoolhouse, tucked around the back. Their colorful outdoor seating comes with a cool breeze, a backdrop of tropical gardens, and mountain and waterfall views.

Kauai catamaran cruise with Captain Andy.

Napali Coast KauaiWe recently returned from Kauai. As first-time visitors with only five days on the island, we were overwhelmed by all there was to see and do. In a good way.

At the top of our list was the spectacular Napali coast, which served as the exotic backdrop for Jurassic Park, King Kong, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Catamarans operate year-round, weather willing, so we decided that was our best bet. Having done some research beforehand, we settled on Captain Andy's Sailing Tour, the top-rated program.

Sand People - great Hawaiian shopping on Kauai, Oahu, and Maui.

Sand People Store in PoipuWhether you're picking up souvenirs for family and friends, or looking for that perfect dining room knick-knack, it's always fun to bring home a little something that reminds you of your trip.

We discovered a little gem of a store in the Poipu Shopping Village on Kauai's south shore. For the little people in your life, there's even a Sand Kids. As we explored the rest of the island, we also visited their shop in the Old School Building at Hanalei Center on the Kuhio Highway.

Filled with beautiful gifts and souvenirs, Sand People has been in business for over 20 years. Their large selection of nautical and beach house influenced items includes bags, casual clothing, soaps, lotions, accents pillows, artwork, and a impressive array of jewelry (which requires no luggage space to get home).
