Visit Iceland for half price.
If last week's financial news has you reeling, be thankful that you're not an Icelander. When Iceland's three leading banks were unable to refinance their existing debt, the government had to step in and take them over. As a result, the local currency has lost nearly half its value, and the life savings of many Icelanders is in jeopardy. The Swedes have pitched in $702 million, and the government of Iceland has asked Russia for a €4 billion loan to help stabilize the economy. Although a full recovery is likely years away.
We've wanted to visit Iceland for some time now. But it always seemed to be more expensive than some more desirable alternative. And let's face it, warm it's not, even in summer.
But if you don't mind bundling up, these days, Iceland is a terrific bargain. Icelandair is offering service from New York or Boston to Reykjavik starting at $400 roundtrip from now through March, 2009. And in November, you can add three nights at the Hilton Reykjavik Nordica for a measly $149 per person.
Plus, the devaluation of the currency means that everything you buy there - from cocktails to handknit sweaters - is half off.
Reykjavik is a little over five hours flying time from the east coast. And winter is the best time to see the Northern Lights. The downside is a meager five hours of daylight. But if you're looking for a out-of-the-ordinary winter getaway, put Iceland on your short list.
