Luxury barge living in Paris.

A few years ago, we went on a barge cruise in Burgundy, and fell in love with barges and barging. So when we found a barge in Paris available by the week, we were all over it.

Moored at Quai Suffren, practically at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, Bateau Simpatico is a great hotel or apartment alternative. Like all boats, she has her idiosyncrasies, and when the huge Bateaux Mouches sightseeing boats ply by, she rocks and rolls wholeheartedly in response. But we thought that was one of the best parts of living aboard.Paris Barge Simpatico

American ex-pat owner, Bob Abrams, has done a beautiful job restoring the vessel, which was built in the Netherlands in 1916. The barge has a head with a conventional toilet, a shower with inexhaustible hot water, and a washing machine - which can really assist you in packing light.

The galley is stocked with everything from a garlic press to a full-size fridge, but who wants to cook in Paris? If you do tire of eating out, you can pick up cheese, fruit, pastries, or rotisserie chicken at the Rue de Grenelle Market, a short stroll from the quay.

The spacious salon has portholes that provide day and night views of the Seine, the beautiful Pont de Bir Hakim, and the Palais de Chaillot across the river. But beautiful as the interior is, why stay inside when you can go topside and enjoy a glass of wine with Paris literally at your doorstep.

Paris Barge SimpaticoAlthough Simpatico can sleep four, it's ideal for a couple seeking a romantic retreat.

The Eiffel Tower Batobus stop is five minutes down the quay, putting most of the city within easy reach. And there are lots of great restaurants in the 7th arondissement within walking distance.

Bob is a helpful, considerate host, there when you need him, invisible when you don't.
